SERVICES FOR THE DISABLED/HOMEBOUND

Dial-A-Ride:  Personalized transportation service for senior citizens age 60 and over, and the disabled.  The vans are handicapped accessible.  Call the Department for an information sheet and simple registration form.

Tickets are $0.50 each, for a one-way fare, and may be purchased from the Town Clerk's Office.  Drivers cannot accept cash.  There is a limit of 20 tickets per month.  Destinations are anywhere in Avon, Farmington Valley Mall, Unionville Center, Collinsville Center, Canton Village and John Dempsey Hospital.  AS OF JULY 1, 2006, DIAL A RIDE SERVICE WILL NOW BE AVAILABLE TO THE NEW SHOPPES AT FARMINGTON VALLEY IN CANTON.  Medical appointments are given priority and can be scheduled far in advance.  Other rides should be scheduled through the service provider (phone 860-793-3444) between 24 and 48 hours in advance.  Urgent, same-day requests can be accommodated, only if there is a cancellation or an opening.  The hours of operation for rides are Mondays through Fridays from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m.   No rides are available on days when the Town Hall is closed.

The service is not available for ongoing or recurring multiple weekly medical appointments or employment.

Meals on Wheels:  This is a nonprofit community service provided to local residents through the McLean Home.  It is aimed at enabling ill, homebound, or disabled persons to maintain their independence in their own homes.  Further information is available through the McLean Home, at (860) 658-3700.

Tax Relief for Elderly/Disabled Homeowners and Renters:  This program gives seniors and/or disabled homeowners property tax relief, as provided through the State of Connecticut. Credits are based on a graduated income scale.  The period for application for homeowners is February 1st - May 15th, while renters may apply May 15th  through September 15th. Homeowners are offered a reduced assessment while renters are issued a one-time check (usually a few hundred dollars).  You may contact the Assessor's office at 409-4335 for more information.

Avon Library Homebound Program:  Let the library come to you!  Volunteers can deliver books, CD's, videos or DVD's, books on tape or CD, and magazines.  If you are homebound due to illness, disability, or advanced age, sign up for the Homebound Delivery Service.  No library card?  Don't worry!  We can register you by phone.  Call the Reference Desk at the Library at (860) 673-9712.

MetroAccess - Wheelchair Transportation:  Most people in wheelchairs without transportation in Connecticut have to rely on pricey, sometimes unreliable, transportation services that require booking in advance, usually by at least a week, advocates said.

One trip could cost hundreds of dollars, and spontaneity is not an option.  The new MetroAccess service costs the same as any other cab fare, and the service is available by calling 860-777-7777.
